While in France, during an attack, a truck was turned over pining him under. He should have been wearing his gas mask but wasn't. A Frenchman who was with him ran away, even while Joe was asking him to come back and hand him his gas mask. Joe was gassed, and nearly died. He lost one lung, and spent 14 years under the medical care of the VA. He spent much time at the VA hospital in Sulphur, Ok. The side of his chest was collapsed, and his suite coats were padded to make up the difference. Bill said Joe hated Frenchmen till the day he died. When he came to visit Lorene and Bill, Lorene would serve him a cup of coffee, after he had gone, Lorene picked up the cup and saucer to find he had left a quarter tip. When Joe died, he had a good deal of money, a wife, two surviving full brothers (Alfonse and Nick), two half brothers (Bill and Ben). He left all his money to Alfonse, who unknown to him was in a hospital, and would live only a few months longer.Joe was considered by his surviving brothers Nick, Bill, and Ben to have been unfair to his father, step mother, wife and brothers. Lorene Johnson remembers Bill Johnson doing this trick after she met him in 1943. Corkey, and Rosily Dickinson dispute that Gene ever had a nice car, or that he ever sold oil. Joe 1922 Robert Ripley 6-28-25 Dear Schanzenbach;I am researching my grandfather Eugene Schanzenbach born between April 25, and Oct 20, 1863 in Binswangen, Nekersulem, Germany. He came to the U.S. at the age of 20 or 21, possibly to avoid the military, or because of a conflict with a military officer. He later married Mary Louise Gilliard (or Gillette) who may have been from the same area in Germany. He changed the family name in 1918 to Johnson.I believe he was the seventh son of his father and lived nine miles from the Reine river (or some river). He may have come to the U.S. on a cattle boat, and may have been with his brother Joe. He did have a brother in Germany who was a Catholic Monk. If you know who my grandfather was, or if you have information about the Schanzenbach history, please send me such information. I hope to gather a good deal of Schanzenbach information, and possibly make it available on the Internet.
